Journal of Drugs in DermatologyWhile a resident at Scott & White of the Texas A&M University Health System, Dr. Greenberg's interest in drug reactions and alternative treatments to skin cancers blossomed. A series of patients with severe clinical reactions to imiquimod, but wonderful outcomes was recognized by Dr.'s Greenberg, Cohen, Orengo & Rosen. An article was written about these patients- and a presentation based on these patients earned Dr. Greenberg an award at the Texas Dermatological Society meeting of May 2006.

Pediatric Dermatology Article While on a dermatology elective at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Dr. Greenberg worked with Dr.'s David Fivenson & Tor Schwayder on an article regarding the use of Lotrisone (betamethasone/clotrimazole) in pediatric patients. Lotrisone is a combination product that many physicians use to treat disorders of the skin when the diagnosis is in question. The major problems with Lotrisone are identified within the article- but are related to the high potency steroid component of the product: striae, thinning of the skin and blood vessels being brought to the surface were all seen as complications from long term drug use. The article suggests that Lotrisone should not be used in children, especially for extended periods of time because of the side effect profile.

We're often asked, "what is the Best sunscreen". There are many answers to this question: The 1st answer is one you will use.  Even when using sunscreen, most people do not use enough product.  It is important to reapply it every 2 hours while outdoors, or after coming out of a swimming pool or sweating.

The 2nd answer to which sunscreen is the best- is one with both UVA & UVB Protection- there are physical and chemical blockers in sunscreen. Physical blockers include zinc and titanium dioxide- they physically block the UV rays from your body. Chemical blockers include Parsol 1789 & will chemically affect changes from the UV rays.  Over time, the chemicals in these chemical blockers will break down, emphasizing the importance of re-application.

Many of the products out there are equivalent, but there are definitely differences between products. We offer a number of different sunscreens including Solbar and Vivite.  Additionally, we have many sunscreen samples from Aveeno, Eucerin, Neutrogena and Cetaphil for our patients to try.

Tanning can be hazardous to your skin's health.

There is no such thing as a, "Healthy Tan". There are many debates and myths regarding tanning, the need for a tan, tanning booths, and vitamin D insufficiency. Like drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes, certain behaviors may not be healthy and may be even worse in excess. As a dermatology practice, we deal with a segment of society that has skin problems, many of which are related to a lifetime of sun exposure, sun burn or other skin insult. Preventing sun damage in the first place is a lot easier than treating damage after the fact.
