HPV stands for, "Human Papilloma Virus" and is the cause of Cervical cancer and warts including genital warts. Gardasil is the name of the new vaccine for prevention of HPV types 6, 11, 16 & 18- these HPV types are comprehensive for 70% of cervical cancers and 90% of genital warts. Currently, this vaccine is approved for females aged 9-26. It is also indicated in males ages 9 through 26 for the prevention of genital warts caused by HPV Types 6 and 11.

Like any vaccine, this vaccine does not treat disease that is already present, instead it acts by preventing the disease from coming about in the first place.
